Kodungallur Kovilakam

Kodungallur Bhagavathi Temple

The legendary Sree Kurumbakavu is situated amidst 10 acres of land, teeming with giant banyan and peepal trees, in the heart of Kodungallur town.

Deity is ‘Kali’ in the nature of mother goddess here.
This first ever 'Kali' Temple in Kerala is venerated to be ‘Mukhteswari’ of ‘Mahoda’, one among the 108 ‘Sakthi Peethams’. Also believed to be the base temple (Moola Kshethram) of 64 Kali (Bhadrakali) Temples and hundreds of other Devi Temples in Kerala.

This temple is supposed to be built by Senguttuvan, Chera ruler of Mahodayapuram in 2nd Century AD and connected with the legend of Kannaki recited in ‘Chilappathikaram’, a Tamil Epic.

The magnificent idol of Bhagavathi, facing north is 6 ft tall and carved out of a single jackfruit tree. Sivalinga is placed in an adjacent Sreekovil facing east. Ganapathi, Saptha Mathrukkal, Vasoorimala, Kshetrapalan & Thavittu Mutthi are sub-deities.

Thalappoli in January & Bharani during February-March are the main celebrations .
The rituals and poojas are conducted using the Rurujith method of adoration. Sree Sankaracharya has installed a Mahameru Sree Chakram here in the Sanctum Sanctorum, and has heightened the intensity of spirituality.
